A Campaign to Promote PreP Education with Unique Branding and Message

The HIV/AIDS prevention landscape has changed dramatically over the last few years. The Mount Sinai Institute for Advanced Medicine teamed with Say It With A Condom to deliver an effective and different awareness campaign using custom condoms to grab attention in a truly dynamic way.

By using custom printed foil condoms to advocate for PrEP and PEP education, it is putting information directly into the hands of the people who need to be aware of it most. That is exactly what Mount Sinai is trying to do and with Say It With A Condom they have a partner in the battle.

Awareness as a Weapon

Condoms are an essential part of safer sex, but they also present a unique opportunity to market a brand or message. Even HIV negative people on PrEP should be using condoms. In a sense, condoms can save a person’s life by using them and by passing a message to the masses.

There are so many people of all shapes, sizes, and colors who are affected by this epidemic. According to Mount Sinai, the rush of people seeking service and education tends to overwhelm more accessible sites (like emergency rooms, etc.) because that is the first place people think of when seeking information or assistance with the risks of HIV/AIDS. Mount Sinai wants to provide people with information to get the drugs they need in order to get them out of the emergency rooms, as well as make PrEP more available than ever before.

“Condoms have more impact than pamphlets and flyers, because they are usable and practical tools, and people trust the Say It With A Condom products more than the average NYC condoms you see everywhere,” says Diane Tider, the Director of Prevention at the Institute of Advanced Medicine, Mount Sinai Health System.

Direct Distribution

By providing face-to-face dispersal, it allows for the marketing of the message to pack a bigger punch. Custom condom packaging provides the opportunity to offer people something different, putting the tools in the hands of the public to manage these diseases and printing right on the condom foil makes it easier to get the message across.

Mount Sinai distributes custom condoms in their emergency rooms, hospital and clinic waiting rooms, and by prevention staff and outreach teams. They are also distributed at PRIDE tables, events that target high risk groups, as well as places of interests such as nightclubs. The initiative by Mount Sinai is funded by New York City, New York State and federal grants.

In New York, many insurance plans (including Medicaid) cover PrEP and PEP but there are many people who do not have insurance at all. Mount Sinai wants to assists everyone, increasing access to medical and prevention services. If you are uninsured or underinsured, they want to help you.

Winning the Crusade

Along with consistent social media campaigns, a 24-hour hotline, groups, and programs, Mount Sinai continues to think outside-the-box in terms of marketing their message. They offer a once-a-month event for PrEP and PEP information, as well as HIV and Hepatitis screening along with their continual condom crusade.

PrEP availability and education, along with HIV/AIDS prevention work seem like a never-ending fight, but by giving people the tools and the message to educate and arm themselves against the struggle, Mount Sinai is building an essential force to combat ignorance and disregard of this serious epidemic. In hand with Say It With A Condom, Mount Sinai takes a massive step closer to the goal of resolving this epidemic on an individual basis, one person at a time.

Playing an Important Part in the Campus Campaign

Culture of Care is a student-led, staff-supported initiative at Indiana University, designed to foster Hoosier-to-Hoosier care in the areas of sexual well-being, drug and alcohol awareness, mental health and respect. Culture of Care is not about meetings, talks or events, it’s about spreading compassion and promoting a culture of awareness and courage. It’s about redefining what it means to be a “Hoosier.”

Say It With A Condom is proud to be part of the Culture of Care campaign which began in the spring of 2012 as a one-week outreach initiative and is now a year-long effort to raise awareness in the aforementioned focus areas, and to encourage bystander intervention. Thanks to eye-catching advocacy tools, such as condom packaging with strategic messaging, the initiative is going strong. It is attracting both new and established students, encouraging them to take personal pride in the emotional and physical safety of their school and the student body.

Capturing the Culture of Care in a Unique Way

Emmalee Fishburn, the Assistant Director for Bystander Intervention and Sexual Assault Prevention within the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, has stated that 32,600 students have been directly impacted or reached (not accounting for social media or Big Ten Network impact). Her department chose Say It With A Condom because the company provided the best branded condoms with “spot on” messaging and exemplary client service. Previous partners included major universities and nonprofit organizations, marking the company as both trusted and reputable. Repeat data analysis has shown that students are benefiting from the campaign as they request additional information and condoms.

Emmalee voiced her approval, saying condoms are an integral part of the collective Culture of Care campaign as they break down barriers of safe sexual awareness. She went on to say that she would whole-heartedly advise other colleges to use condoms to promote consent and sexual health. Students are having sex, why not give them the tools for a healthy experience. She used three strong words to describe her experience with Say It With A Condom: Attentive, Efficient, Intentional.

Doubling Down on Dynamic Publicity

2017_CoCWeek_SexualWellBeingTabling2_IMG_2032Just a few short weeks after placing a massive custom product order from Say It With A Condom, they came back and ordered again, stating that the condoms connect with the students in ways other promotional products did not. At tabling events all year long, they handed out pens, stickers, water bottles, journals, and other relevant promotional pieces, but the custom Culture of Care condoms garnered the most attention and none were to be found after the event.

Culture of Care informs students of the services available to them on campus and trains them in bystander intervention through the Step UP! IU program, which walks students through real-life-inspired scenarios to prepare them to intervene – not just a passive witness – when they see someone in need. Each student has or knows someone who has experienced something related to our focus areas, and we encourage students to connect with one another and to work together to combat these serious campus issues. There is no better way to promote real-life scenarios than with real-life tools such as a condom.

By providing students with the appropriate tools to organically and proactively spread the message, it arms the entire student body with the weapons they need to fight the good fight of awareness. More than proponents of safe sex, condoms not only provide a powerful message, they are a shareable tool in times of need. Friends give friends condoms. This is a good thing. The message on the package should reflect a responsible message and empower the user.

Continuing More Campaigns

Culture of Care’s strength lies in its collaborative approach to culture change. In order to continue making an impact on students’ lives, those behind the initiative believe that support from all levels of IU campuses – administration, staff, faculty, student leaders, and students – is essential to creating a Culture of Care. Say It With A Condom is dedicated to continually assist Indiana University and the Culture of Care promote bystander intervention through four focus areas: Respect, Sexual Well-Being, Mental Health, and Drugs and Alcohol.

Say It With A Condom looks forward to again working with Indiana University. We also look forward to strategic conversations about safe sex, consent, and the campaigns that promote these issues with colleges and universities throughout our country.

With the Help of Say It With A Condom’s Dedication

Glenn Harvey of the State of Alaska’s Department of Health and Social Services is the creative director of the campaign to bring down the high STD rates in Alaska, and what better way to do that than with free condoms.

Early on, Mr. Harvey decided that education and distributing condoms would be focal points of the campaign. It’s one thing for a campaign to tell people what to do, it’s another thing for that campaign to hand them the solution directly.

Say It With A Condom Ships to AlaskaShipping Safety, Responsibility & Cleverness

500,000 condoms were mailed to 26 of Alaska’s health clinics, plus Planned Parenthood, the Anchorage Reproductive Health Clinic, and many others. Even the military wanted to distribute the protective products.

Say It With a Condom has proven to be quite popular with the people. People even started to collect the different condom packages. The Department of Health and Social Services went through 13 thousand condoms between May and August of 2013. Glenn and his team had to express order more that September.

“Alaska is different than the lower 48, and we want to spread the message over a multiple of generations, and with Say It With A Condom we can do that in a clever, progressive way. Condoms are always.”

Looking Out for Everyone

Alaska Wallet CondomWhen orchestrating the campaign, Glenn knew he needed to overcome some challenges. Say It With A Condom kept him and his department on budget, while allowing them to order exactly what they wanted without any extra costs. The funny, edgy condoms were even shipped to the bush. Alaska has some extremely remote locations, accessible only by plane, so a lot of orders were fulfilled online and shipped by plane to outlying villages and small towns.

The Office of the Commissioner loves the campaign, which continuously uses Say It With A Condom products at many different events both large and small. The campaign is growing, because the condoms were successful, thanks to Say It With A Condom, with more young men and women in Alaska becoming sexually responsible.

Huge Shipment of Alaska Condoms

How Say It With A Condom Helped Them Market a Message of Pride

G-Star Raw is a renowned luxury denim company with a flagship store in Los Angeles. G-Star was lucky to discover Say It With A Condom via a simple internet search, and now we are lifelong friends.

Luck Turned to Brilliance

They had the idea of doing custom condoms for Pride weekends in their local markets. They have always supported the LGBT communities, and thought that Say It With A Condom could take their marketing campaign to the next level, while at the same time promoting safe sex.

They went a step further and hired models to wear special G-Star denim jumpers to walk around during the Pride Parade and hand them out. And in other markets, they set up free baskets and bowls of condoms for folks to take freely.

“People loved them. It was a playful but thoughtful campaign and people really appreciated it.”

Wear It with Pride

Just like their revolutionary jeans, G-Star knew that their message would go further and grab more attention by displaying on a condom in a visceral fashion, because they bring a fresh perspective to sexual health through the fusion of advanced product design, manufacturing technology and social responsibility.

G-Star is still handing out their custom condoms daily, and planning to do another reorder soon.

Hunters you have been pranked by PETA.

For the past six months, outdoor show operators, hunting clubs, and notorious trophy hunters, including Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, who have been spotted bagging African leopards, water buffalos, and elephants in Zimbabwe, have received packs of complimentary Huntsman Condoms.

PETA decided it was time to mess with these bored, recreational hunters. So, along with Say It With A Condom, they secretly developed, marketed and distributed a brand of condoms especially for hunters. The brand was called Huntsman and its real purpose was to encourage hunters to stop reproducing.

Because it’s a fact that hunting is passed on from generation to generation, PETA successfully marketed Huntsman to the global hunting community and they didn’t suspect a thing. Now the world is having a good laugh at your expense.

Utah’s Planned Parenthood branch won’t hand out condom packages printed with a symbol associated with Mormon youth teachings after an image of the wrappers on its Facebook page generated backlash.

The wrappers stamped with a popular design symbolizing the phrase “Choose the Right” were a limited run intended to spark open conversation about sexual health, Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Katrina Barker said.

But an image of the prophylactics posted on their Facebook page generated controversy among people who disapproved of using a shield logo very similar to popular rings worn by Mormon children and teenagers.

PPLM Partners with Say It With A Condom

For a recent local radio concert sponsored by the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM), 5,000 condoms were distributed in under two hours. Needless to say, for them, being able to customize and hand out a promotional condom from Say It With A Condom was a quick and affordable way to deliver their message to the masses.

Educating the Community

From colleges to women’s homeless shelters, the condoms are very well received. They even created a condom mascot, a hashtag and a college campaign name: Great Sex is Safe Sex. Anne, the Marketing Associate for PPLM, and Sloane have worked tirelessly yet cleverly to spread the word of safe sex, and along with Say It With A Condom, hope to add to the 87 year history of PPLM. Without a doubt, they are opening eyes and spreading awareness, one condom at a time.

“By using Say It With A Condom, our message is constantly delivered in a clever, eye-catching way, exciting individuals about sexual education.”

Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts

The strong, overall mission of PPLM is to protect and promote sexual and reproductive health and freedom of choice by providing clinical services, education and advocacy. The league’s vision is that sexual health is a personal and public health priority.

Getting Clever About Protection

PPLM’s Business Development Department spring boarded the current concert and college campaigns, which sought to hand out clever condoms to grab attention for the cause. With the help of Say It With A Condom, the league continues to bolster that cause with next generation marketing and social tactics.

The seminary is affiliated with the United Church of Christ, a liberal and LGBT-inclusive denomination, and hosts an LGBTQ Religious Studies Center.

The latex condoms come wrapped in packaging that shows a rainbow-colored version of the church’s logo and the slogan “Take Two (for the second coming!).” Faculty and students handed out the condoms at Chicago’s LGBT Pride parade, at the church synod’s Pride Day, and a Christian music festival in North Carolina.
