Across the country, dozens of colleges and universities are holding programs and campus-wide events to commemorate Sexual Assault Awareness month. With the challenge to leave an impression on students and event attendees, organizations have come up with some pretty creative ways to recognize and address the prevalent issue within communities and on college campuses.
UC Merced participates in what’s called The Clothesline Project, created to bring awareness for sexual violence by writing sexual assault messages on color coded t-shirts, and hanging them on a clothesline for display.
University of Miami students participated in an event titled “Walk a Mile In her Shoes” where men walk around a campus to empathize with victims of sexual assault.
University of Utah hosted a SlutWalk to end victim blaming within sexual assault cases.
Other schools, including UC Berkeley, West Virginia University, and Spelman College hosted a variety of events throughout the month in recognition of sexual assault on their campuses.
With the commemorative month coming to a close, it’ll be interesting to see how these conversations surrounding sexual assault continue on campuses and among students. As the issue persists, the hope is that these conversations will help prevent assaults from happening, or lead to further action and stricter regulations for prevention on an administrative level.
